Baix Camp

The comarca of Baix Camp (Eng. "lower country ", Spanish Campo Bajo ) is located in the province of Tarragona of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia (Spain). Baix Camp was created in 1936 when the historic region of Camp de Tarragona was divided into three Comarcas. The community association has an area of 687.56 km ² and 146 585 inhabitants (2009 ).

Location

The community association is located in the south-west of Catalonia, it is bordered on the north by the comarca of Conca de Barberà, to the east of Alt Camp and Tarragonès, on the southwest by Baix Ebre and Ribera d'Ebre, in the west of the Priory and in the south on the 30 km coast of the Mediterranean. Together with the Comarcas Anoia, Alt Camp, Baix Penedès, Conca de Barberà, Priory, Tarragonès forms the region 's territory Camp de Tarragona.

The comarca of Baix Camp forms, together with Alt Camp and Tarragonès the natural landscape of the Camp de Tarragona, a large plain between the upstream mountain ranges and the Mediterranean. One can find two completely different landscape types: one is the mountain ranges of Prades and Pratdip, on the other plane extending from the foot of these mountains to the coast. Although almost half of the comarca is located at an altitude below 200 m, are about 5 % to about 1,000 m above sea level. This is remarkable in that only 20 line kilometers of the coast are removed as these mountain ranges.

Climate

The coastal mountain range protects the plane in front of the continental climate of the Zentralkatalanischen lowlands. On the other hand, there is on the plateau of Prades a typical subalpine climate, in which snow is not peculiar. Due to the channeling effect of the mountain trains regularly high wind speeds are measured in the Baix Camp.

Population

In the Baix Camp live almost 150,000 people. The population has increased since the middle of last century closed, just in the last 30 years, an annual average of 1.5%. However, the population growth is unevenly distributed, in particular, it focuses on Reus, industrial and administrative center of the Comarca. Around two-thirds of the inhabitants live in the comarca of Reus. Already between the 17th and 19th century Reus was next to Barcelona the most populous city of Catalonia, and as late as 1910 it was ranked fourth (now in tenth place). Except Reus today only Cambrils exceeds the 10,000 -inhabitant border.

Economy

In agriculture, the cultivation of dry fruits (almonds and hazelnuts) predominates, with a share of only 30 % in the primary sector, a response to the devastating phylloxera in the 19th century. The large dependence of almonds and hazelnuts but has led to their current declining world market price has a strong impact on the economy of the comarca. A certain balance is the protected designation of origin for the Avellana de Reus ( " hazelnuts from Reus " ), which also include the regions of Alt Camp, Tarragonès, Priorat, Conca de Barberà and Terra Alta.

Traffic

The Comarca is well served by a highway, highways, railways and the airport of Reus.
