Bajtra

Bajtra is a high percent - alcoholic, typical Maltese liqueur. It is made from the ripe fruits of Opuntia ficus- indica, the so-called cactus figs.

The prickly pear is originally from America and was brought by sailors to Malta in the 15th century. The Knights of Malta finally composed from the Bajtra liqueur, which is made in Malta at Zeppi 's in Naxxar. This is also considered a national drink. The fruit of the prickly pear gives the liqueur a fruity- sweet note. In Malta the Bajtra is cooled with Chardonnay or drinking lemonade.
