Baker County (Georgia)
The Baker County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Newton.
Geography
The county has an area of 904 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Dougherty County, Mitchell County, Decatur County, Miller County, Early County and Calhoun County.
History
The Baker County was formed on December 12, 1825 61 County from portions of Early County and named for Colonel John Baker, one of the first farmer and soldier in the American Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Baker County 4,074 people in 1,514 households and 1,094 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 47.42 percent White, 50.39 percent Black or African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.02 percent Asian, 0.0 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.33 percent from other races groups; 0.61 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.72 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,514 households out of which 33.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.7 percent were married couples living together, 19.5 percent were single mothers and 27.7 percent were non-families. 25.1 percent of all households and 10.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.20 persons.
27.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.0 percent between 18 to 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 22.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.7 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 86.2 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,338, and the median income for a family $ 36,438. Males have a median income of $ 25,891, women $ 16,462. The per capita income was $ 16,969. 19.9 percent of families and 23.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
Crime
In 2000 there were 15 reported crimes. That was one robbery, three violent attacks on persons, 9 burglaries and two car thefts.
