The State University of Baku ( Azerbaijani: Baki Dövlət Universiteti; Russian Бакинский государственный университет ) is a university in the Azerbaijani capital Baku.

History

The Baku State University was founded in 1919 during the First independence of Azerbaijan. Founding Rector Vasily Razumovsky was previously a professor at the University of Kazan. After the occupation of Azerbaijan by Bolshevik troops on April 28, 1920 several hundreds of Azerbaijani professors were deported to Siberia. The university disciplines were exposed to a broad policy of Russification. In 1945, the University took a leading role in the founding of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. The University of Medicine Baku, the University of Economics Baku and the Baku Pedagogical University are spin-offs from the National University.

In 1969 there was a realignment of research and teaching. Several faculties and more than 30 scientific institutes have since been re-established.

Organization

About 13,000 students studying in 43 different disciplines in 17 faculties, 116 departments and numerous research laboratories. The library has a stock of over 2 million volumes. About 250 professors and over 1,000 faculty and academic staff teach in the Bachelor 's and Master's programs.

The University is a member of the network of Balkan Universities and the International Inter Academic Union ( IIAU ). Consist university partnerships with 25 foreign universities in the United States, Japan, China, Sudan, Jordan, Russia, Britain, France, Turkey and Iran.
