Bala Lake Railway

The Bala Lake Railway ( Welsh: Llyn Tegid Rheilffordd ) is a preserved railway at Bala Lake, in Gwynedd, North Wales. The train runs on a 4 ½ miles ( 7.2 km ) long route on the southern shore of Lake Bala on a track width of 610 mm with a largely historical, over 100 years old locomotives.

History

The track was built on a section of the former Ruabon - Barmouth line of the Great Western Railway, which was decommissioned in 1965. The section is located on the southeastern shore of Lake Bala. Another section of the former route is now used as a standard gauge heritage railway on the Llangollen Railway.

Heritage railway operation

The rides start at the museum railway station of Llanuwchllyn ( the place name means Church on the lake ). In this there are also the roundhouse, the shops and the offices of the Company. Endpoint is Bala Lake Halt railway station in Bala. This is in addition to a pedestrian crossing, a siding and a small shelter no infrastructure facilities and is located just outside of Bala. There were several plans to extend the railway in the town itself, but so far none of the plans could be realized (as of 2009 ).

The over 100 year old steam locomotives MAID MARIAN hot HOLY WAR and ALICE. It was all built by the Hunslet Engine Company. The railway company has for passenger traffic continues to be a diesel locomotive called Merioneth.
