Balbriggan

Province

Balbriggan ( Irish: Baile Brigín ) is a town in County Fingal on the east coast of Ireland.

Etymology

About the origin of the Irish name Baile Brigín there is no agreement; among several possibilities, especially the derivation of Baile Breacain meaning " Brecans city" or the etymologically not well-documented importance be "City of the small hill " preferred. For the latter interpretation is the fact that the place is actually surrounded by low hills; for the etymologically more coherent meaning " Brecans city " speaks that Brecan was a familiar medieval first name and the area before the invasion of the Normans was known as Breaga. A third possibility is a possible reference to the local Bracken River, where the name of breicín meaning " little trout " could be derived.
