History

The Baldwin County was formed on December 21, 1809 from parts of Washington County, ten years before Alabama became a state. It was named for Abraham Baldwin (1754-1807), one of the founding fathers of the United States and from 1799 to 1807 U.S. - senator from Georgia.

The first county seat was located where today the Washington County belonging McIntosh Bluff on the Tombigbee River. 1810 the administrative headquarters was relocated to Blakeley and 1868 to Daphne.
