Baldwin V, Count of Hainaut

Baldwin V (* 1150, † December 17, 1195 ) was Count of Hainaut since 1171, as Baldwin VIII Count of Flanders since 1191, when Baldwin I, Margrave of Namur since 1189 His parents were Baldwin IV and Alice of Namur.. Namur, he was the ( posthumous ) inheritance of his mother, Flanders by his marriage with Margaret of Flanders 1169th

Baldwin V led a discussion about the County of Luxembourg, which was triggered by the long childlessness of his uncle, Henry the Blind, Count of Luxembourg. Henry had married in 1157 Lauretta of Alsace, the daughter of Dietrich of Alsace, Count of Flanders, and Sibyl of Anjou. The marriage fell apart in 1163 childless, so his brother Henry Baldwin IV, Baldwin's father began as his heir, but no longer led to Baldwin's own lifetime consequences.

1171 married Henry IV again, Agnes of money, which in 1186 bore him a daughter, Ermesinde, now what led to Henry's estate planning problems, because he was convinced that his Erbversprechen is now obsolete. Baldwin V, however, wanted to say also that this granted to inheritance. Emperor Frederick Barbarossa was forced then to settle:

  • Baldwin V should get the County of Namur,
  • Ermesinde should inherit the counties of Durbuy and Laroche,
  • The county of Luxembourg should fall back to the Emperor, as there was no male heir.
