Baldwin V of Jerusalem

Baldwin V (* 1177, † September 1186 in Acre ) was the son of Sibyl of Jerusalem and her first husband William of Montferrat. He was from 1183 King of Jerusalem.

His uncle, King Baldwin IV († 1185 ), who suffered from leprosy, appointed him as his successor and had him still crown for his own lifetime to the king in 1183. Due to his minority Baldwin V was under the regency of Count Raymond III. of Tripoli.

In his time as king Saladin continued his attacks on the kingdom which was leprous Baldwin IV by the already weakened. Sibylle and her second husband, Guy of Lusignan, had with Raynald of Chatillon against Raymond III. allied, when the young king died in 1186 in Acre. He was buried in the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

Sibylle became queen, Guido her co-regent, but he had the real power in his hands and was soon the expected invasion by Saladin against, against whom he suffered in the Battle of Hattin in 1187 a crushing defeat, which resulted in a large part of the Kingdom including Jerusalem was conquered by the Muslims.
