Baler, Aurora

Baler is a Philippine municipality in the province of Aurora. The small town is the seat of the provincial government of the province of Aurora.

Geography

Baler is the political and economic center of Aurora. The municipality is located about 230 kilometers northwest of Manila in the east of the island of Luzon in a vast plain at the western end of Baler Bay. Due to high waves of the bay attracts especially surfers. The Aurora Cup is visited by hundreds every February surfers. The municipality is bordered to the east by the Baler Bay, the municipalities of San Luis in the south, Maria Aurora in the west and Dipaculao in the northwest.

History

Baler was founded in 1609 as Kinagunasan of Fray Valeriano as Barangay. In December 1735 a tsunami destroyed the small town Kinagunasan. The place was once the most important city of El Principo, a district of the province of Nueva Ecija. With the establishment of sub-provincial Aurora on June 14, 1951 Baler seat of the provincial government.

Personalities

Manuel Luis Quezon, first president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines was born in Baler.
