Balestrino

Balestrino ( in Ligurian: Barestin ) is a municipality with 586 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the northern Italian region of Liguria. Politically it belongs to the province of Savona.

Geography

Balestrino is located in the hinterland of Loano, seven kilometers from the coast of the Riviera di Ponente. To the community includes the settlements Borgo Poggio Sottano, Poggio Soprano, Cuneo, Bergalla and Sambuco which are interconnected by roads, streets or woodland trails.

Balestrino is part of the Comunità Montana Pollupice and is about 43 kilometers away from the provincial capital Savona.

According to the Italian classifications for seismic activity, the community of Zone 3 was assigned. This means that Balestrino is in a seismically active zone little.

History

Balestrino was largely abandoned a long time ago because of a feared landslide, the center is so far dominated by abandoned houses. Today's inhabitants have settled again on the edge of the former village.

The town has been the setting for the 2008 film shot Inkheart.
