Balikpapan is a city on the Indonesian part of Borneo ( Kalimantan ). It has approximately 434,000 inhabitants, the largest city in the province of Kalimantan Timur ( Ostborneo ).

Balikpapan is located on the east coast of the island, at the Makassar Strait, about 150 km south of the provincial capital Samarinda. The most important industry is oil production, processing in several refineries, as well as its export from a major oil port. In addition, the mining and the timber industry (export of tropical woods from the rainforest of Borneo ) play a role. Balikpapan also has an international airport.

Until the discovery of the first oil well in 1897 in the territory of the present-day city was just a small village. Then began a rapid growth. Due to the oil fields and refineries, the city in World War II was hard fought: In January 1942, it came to the battle against Balikpapan, in February 1942, the city was captured by the Japanese army, recaptured in July 1945 by the Allies.
