Balinger

A Balinger was a seefähiges ship of different size and equipment in the late Middle Ages.

Balinger mentioned in English and Hanseatic sources. In the Hanseatic deed books, the Municipal protocols (eg Lübeck, Hamburg) and the Hanserezessen be manning levels from 6 to 60 and a man mentioned Sails can be accepted. 1474 Hamburg sold a Balinger for 156 pounds to a private individual. According to British sources, the vehicles look different. Then there are support vehicles of the great warships. You have 30 to 48 belts and 1418 are called 80 ts water displacement. It is mentioned a castle, a bowsprit, mast with a square sail. Other vehicles already carry a mizzen. Later, a two-masted sailing rig with square sails seems to have established itself on the main mast and a mizzen, the belts were retained. However, over the external appearance little known and differences to other ship types ( Barge, Barcke, Holk ) elusive. This type of ship was used as a caper and warship.

The origin of the name is unclear. Balaena Latin and French baleine means whale, but a relationship is out of the similarity of the name can not be found.
