Balkanabat

Balkanabat (Russian Балканабад, formerly Nebit -Dag or Nebitdag ) is the capital of the province of West Balkans in Turkmenistan with 108,000 inhabitants ( 1999).

It is located about 600 km north- west of the capital Ashgabat. It was founded in 1933 as a station of the Trans- Caspian Railway, and was called to 1946 Nefte -Dag (Russian Neft: petroleum). From 1946 to 1999, she was named Nebit -Dag and subsequently received its current name. The city is an industrial center for the oil and natural gas processing.
