Ballangen

Ballangen is a Norwegian municipality. The center of the municipality is the same place Ballangen about 40 kilometers south of Narvik located.

The municipality extends from the fjord to the Swedish border and has a total area of 930 km ². The number of inhabitants is about 2,700 people.

Mining

The municipality is characterized by mining activities. Started these activities in the 16th century with the mining of copper. However, the activities lasted only a few years. This was the first attempt to operate mining in northern Norway.

The most important mining period began in 1911 and lasted until the closure of the mines in 1964. Was degraded pyrite and copper ore. There were employed in mining up to 350 people. The degradation occurs to a depth of 450 meters.

Sky på jord (Eng. heaven on earth ) - granite sculptures in the form of a gate and balls.

Ballangen Museum - The museum has a focus on the mining activities and in addition to old objects for agriculture, fishing, school and cultural life.
