Ballia district

The district Ballia (Hindi: बलिया जिला ) is a district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Administrative center is the eponymous town of Ballia.

Geography

Ballia district is the easternmost of Uttar Pradesh and is located in the Azamgarh Division at the border of the neighboring Federal State of Bihar. The district extends into the wedge-shaped area of Bihar. The district has an area of 2,981 square kilometers and is part of the flat and intensively farmed Gangetic Plain. Its boundaries form the Ganges in the south and its tributary Ghaghara in the north, whose confluence marks the easternmost point of the district area. Besides these two great rivers still flow of Chhoti Sarju, a minor tributary of the Ganges by the district. North of Ballia is the lake Suraha valley, which is connected by the river Kaithar Nadi with the Ganges. During the rainy season the water of the Ganges flows to the sea, in the dry season, the flow reverses direction.

Neighboring districts are Ghazipur in the southwest, in the West Mau, Deoria in the north ( all Uttar Pradesh ) and Bihar Siwan and Saran in the north- east, in the southeast of Bhojpur and Buxar in the south.

The district Ballia is divided into six Tehsils Rasra, Bansdih, Ballia, Bairia, Sikanderpur and Belthra Road.

History

Ballia was established in 1879 during the British colonial period as a district of the United Provinces. Previously the area had been part of the district of Ghazipur. After the Indian independence in 1947 showed the state of Uttar Pradesh from the United Provinces.

Population

According to the Indian census of 2011, Ballia district has 3,239,774 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 17 percent, slightly slower than in Uttar Pradesh funds ( 20 percent). The population density is 1,088 inhabitants per square kilometer with over the already high average of the state ( 829 inhabitants per square kilometer). Here, the district is very rural: only nine percent of the population live in cities. The literacy rate is 71 percent above the average of Uttar Pradesh (68 percent), but slightly below the all-India average ( 73 percent).

The population of the district according to the 2001 census, Hindus represent 93 percent of the vast majority. There is also a Muslim minority of nearly seven percent.
