Ballina, New South Wales

Ballina is an Australian city in New South Wales with 16,477 inhabitants. It lies about 40 km south of Byron Bay at the mouth of the Richmond River. Ballina was founded in 1842 under the name of Deptford. Irish settlers adapted the name balloonah or bullenah ( aborig. for " place where there are oysters " or " blood that trickles from the wounded " - as a possible allusion to a massacre of Aborigines 1852) to Ballina (see Ballina in Mayo, Ireland).
