Ballism

Under ballism (Greek βάλλειν ( ballein ) "throw, hurl " ) refers to a disorder that is caused by the damage of belonging to the extrapyramidal motor system subthalamic nucleus (or its pathways to the globus pallidus ). He is counted among the extrapyramidal hyperkinesis.

Ballism manifested by sudden, involuntary and violent flinging movements of the arms and legs or shoulder and pelvic girdles. The term " ballism " originates from the similarity of these involuntary movements with throwing movements. Often, the disease occurs only on one side ( then contralateral) as Hemiballism on. The disease only a limb is called Monoballismus.
