Ballymoney

Ballymoney ( Irish: Baile Monaidh; German: " homestead on the peatland " ) is a city in north- east of Ireland in County Antrim in Northern Ireland and the administrative center of the District Ballymoney.

The place

Ballymoney is located just east of the River Bann and 25 miles from the Giant's Causeway in the north- west County Antrim, a good 10 kilometers south-east of Coleraine as nearest larger city. Ballymena is about 30 kilometers to the southeast. Situated on the A26 between these places, Ballymoney thus benefiting also from good connections to major cities in Northern Ireland Belfast and Derry City. Due to relatively higher house and land prices in and north of Coleraine, many home buyers have settled in recent years alternatively in and around Ballymoney.

Classroom Ballymoney is one of North Antrim. The population of the town was founded in 2001 with 9021 people found the Census, of which 17.3 % are Catholics and 79.8 % were Protestant; the unemployment rate ( 16-74 years) was 3.9 %.

Historical Buildings

A church steeple from 1637 is the oldest surviving building in Ballymoney. The the course of time used for changing purposes Masonic hall was built in 1775 by the 6th Earl and 2nd Marquis of Antrim, today's town hall dates from the year 1866.

The railroad

In the 19th century the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway moved its main line through Ballymoney. From 1880 a branch line was set up to Ballycastle. The so-called Ballycastle Railway wrong on a narrow gauge of three feet ( = 914 mm) over 25 miles across the hilly Antrim and was up to the Second World War in operation. In the present, Ballymoney has a station on the route from Belfast to Derry, which is operated by Northern Ireland Railways.
