Baltzenheim

Baltzenheim ( German Balzenheim, dialectal " Balze " ) is a commune with 578 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to Canton Andolsheim and community association Pays de Brisach.

Geography

Baltzenheim is located 1.5 km west of the Rhine, which forms the border between France and the Federal Republic of Germany there. In parallel with the natural flow is the Rhine side channel. Northeast of Baltzenheim there is a dam.

History

In the year 786 a settlement on the basis of the city was mentioned for the first time, 847 it received the name Baldofesheim.

The Thirty Years War destroyed much of the population, so that in 1636 only six people in the village lived.

Around 1720, the town was repeatedly victims of the Rhine, which often led to its containment in the 19th century to flood. A former branch of the Rhine, the Rhin de Biesheim runs directly east of Baltzenheim.
