Baluster

The balusters (Italian balaustro from Greek Balaustion: Pomegranate ) is the low single column of a balustrade. Most balusters have a round shape, but there are also polygonal models. Balusters have a highly profiled shaft. The center of the balusters is usually built bulbous ( thicker). They are made of wood, natural stone, stucco or metal. The wooden baluster is also called skein.

In the furniture art baluster used since ancient times as table and chair legs for representation furniture. In architecture they found only in the Renaissance as supporting elements of the railing use.
