Bambouk

Bambouk ( different spelling Bambouk ) is a region in Mali and is located in the administrative unit Kayes. Bambouk lies to the east of the upper Falémé and southwest of Kaarta, a former Bambara Empire. The region is mountainous and is crossed by numerous tributaries of the Falémé, inter alia, by Sanon Kolé ( which was earlier times called Gold River ). Center of the region is Farabana.

The pastures sheep and cattle farming is operated. Besides rice, corn, millet, watermelon, palm trees and bananas are grown. The region is also rich in iron ore and gold deposits. It already purchased the legendary land of gold, the kingdom of Ghana, the Mali Empire and its prosperity.

History

Bambouk was visited by the Portuguese in the 15th century, the 16th century French traders arrived in the area, who founded a trading post in Galam. In the mid-18th century there were small French trading posts at various locations Bambuks. In the 18th century Mungo Park and Major Daniel Houghton traveled through the region. In the 19th century, Al- Hajj Omar tried to conquer the land and was eventually defeated by the French.
