Bamir Topi

Myrteza Bamir Topi hear? / I ( born April 24, 1957 in Tirana) is an Albanian politician. He is chairman of the New Democratic Party wind. Between 2007 and 2012 he was President of the Republic of Albania, until he was replaced by Bujar Nishani.

Life

Study and time as a scientist

Bamir Topi completed his first studies with high levels of the Agricultural University of Tirana, in the field of veterinary medicine. With the same notes he obtained a doctorate in philosophy also. With 27 years, ie in 1984, he was employed as a scientist at the Institute of Veterinary Science Research in Tirana. He worked there until 1995. Additionally, he completed between 1987 and 1990 a Postgraduate studies in Italy, in the area of ​​molecular biology. After his return from Italy he became director of the Institute of Food Safety and Veterinary Medicine. A post he held until 1995.

First political experiences

After his time at the Institute for Food Safety and Veterinary Medicine, he turned to politics and in 1996 was elected to the Albanian Parliament. In 1996/ 97, he was then briefly Minister for Agriculture and Food. As a member of the Democratic Party ( PD), he was elected three times to parliament. He was twice leader of the Democrats and a member of several technical committees. Topi is estimated in the country's media very much for his search for a dialogue between government and opposition.

Years as head of state

Bamir Topi was elected on 20 July 2007 after four attempts by Parliament to the President, thanks to the votes of six members of the opposition Socialist Party (PS ), the rest boycotted the vote because they demanded a majority candidate. Topi was at that time vice chairman of the Democratic Party. On July 24, Topi succeeds by Alfred Moisiu.

In summer 2012 Bamir Topi ended tenure because he was not re-elected. Him little chance were attributed, for since his election as president, relations deteriorated due to large differences between Topi and the party chairman of the PD and Prime Minister Sali Berisha always more. The highlight of this dispute Berisha expressed in January 2011 after the bloody protests of the Socialists on 21 January (see Political crisis in Albania from 2009) publicly expressed his distaste for the head of state. New Party

Topi is married with Teuta Topi and has two daughters, Nada and Etida. He is also honorary president of FK Tirana.
