Bamus Volcano

The symmetrical volcanic cone Bamus (also known among the local population under the name South Son) is located southwest of Ulawun volcano ( known as the North Son). These two volcanoes are the highest in the 1,000 -kilometer-long chain of volcanoes of the Bismarck Archipelago. The andesitic stratovolcano is densely forested and be filled with a lava crater is broken on one side. Located on the southern flank of another volcanic cone and on the southeast flank there is a crater with a diameter of 1.5 kilometers. The volcano is covered with deposits of pyroclastic flows. On the basis of the radiocarbon dating method three outbreaks in the years 350 to ± 75 years BC, 270 BC ± 50 years proven and 1650 ± 50 years. Historical records report from another eruption in 1886 ( ± 8 years).
