Bandiagara is a city in the region of Mopti in the West African nation of Mali. It is the capital of the district of the same name. Bandiagara is above the cliffs of Bandiagara ( Falaise de Bandiagara ), a sandstone escarpment in the Dogon country, sloping down to the south for a distance of 200 kilometers almost vertically and up to 250 meters deep into the Gondo level. The circle Bandiagara comprises 21 municipalities, including the municipality Sangha which is considered the center of the Dogon culture. The town has 25,564 inhabitants Bandiagara ( census 2009). Before the Dogon lived there, the area was inhabited by the Tellem and the Toloy. Many buildings are reminiscent of the culture of the Tellem.

Nowadays locals lead tourists through the heights of the Bandiagara to visit the villages of the Dogon. Different paths lead through the hills. The " reciprocal (s) strangeness experiences of tourists and locals in the Dogon country (Mail ) " around the Falaise de Bandiara, for 10 years investigating German educators. Being close to since April 2012 controlled by the Islamist group Ansar Dine northern Mali ( Azawad ), however, came the tourism to a halt.
