Bandon, County Cork

Bandon ( Irish: Droichead na Bandan; German: " Bridge over the Bandon ") is a town in County Cork in the south (west ) s of the Republic of Ireland.

Geography and demography

Bandon lies on the River Bandon between two hills in the south of the county of Cork. From Cork City Bandon is about 30 km from Cork Airport is about 23 km - each in a south-westerly direction - away. The village lies on the N71 national road from Cork City to Killarney in County Kerry, which - as an alternative to much shorter N22 - in its partially coastal course is a popular tourist route through the south-western Ireland. Bus Éireann connects Bandon, among other things regularly with Cork City.

The population Bandons was determined during Census 2006, 5822 people. With Bandon (Oregon ), which was founded in 1873 by Lord George Bennet and named the Irish Bandon after his birthplace, is a town twinning.

Origins

Bandon celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2004. The town was founded in the early 17th century as part of the Munster Plantation than English settlement exclusively for Protestants; Catholics were forbidden the establishment in the town. The first English settlers came from Somerset. An approximately one mile ( 1.61 km ) long rampart surrounded the place. Over time, several bridges were built to connect the resulting districts on both banks of the river, and the place was known as Bandon - Bridge or in Irish Droichead na Bandan.

Finbarr, the patron saint of the city and Diocese of Cork, was probably born around 550 near Bandon.
