Bang Khonthi District

Amphoe Bang Khonthi ( Thai: อำเภอ บางคนที ) is a district ( Amphoe ) of Samut Songkhram Province in central Thailand.

Geography

The district lies on the northwestern edge of the Bay of Bangkok.

Neighboring districts ( from east clockwise): Amphoe Mueang Samut Songkhram and the Amphawa Samut Songkhram Province and Amphoe Wat Phleng, Mueang Ratchaburi and Damnoen Saduak Ratchaburi Province.

The Mae Klong flows through the county.

History

In 1913, Bang Khonthi has been increased by the area of Mae Nam Om; to date in Ratchaburi, it was simultaneously Samut Songkhram assumed. 1914, the district of Si Muen ( สี่ หมื่น ) renamed Bang Konthi.

Attractions

Khai Bang Kung is a former fort of the Navy, which was in the late Ayutthaya and Thonburi period of great importance. After it was left to decay for almost 200 years, renovated in 1967, a group of Thai Boy Scouts, the area and a statue of King Taksin was erected.

The most important Buddhist temple ( Wat ) is Wat Charoen Sukharam Worawihan. In his ubosot a Buddha statue called Luang Pho Toa is highly revered.

In Bang Nok Khwaek is the center of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ratchaburi. The Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral was built in 1890 in the French- Gothic style.

The Traditional Floating Market Bang Nok Khwaek near the King Rama II Memorial Park is open all day on weekends and holidays.

Management

Amphoe Bang Khonthi is divided into 13 communes ( tambon), which in turn in 101 village communities ( Muban ) are divided.

There are two small towns ( thesaban tambon) in the district:

  • Kradang -nga ( Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล กระดังงา ) consists of parts of the tambon Kradang -nga,
  • Bang Nok Khwaek ( Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล บาง นก แขวก ) consists of parts of the tambon Bang Khonthi Tambon Bang Nok and the entire Khwaek.

In addition, there are nine " Tambon Administrative Organizations" (TAO, องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - administrative organizations) in the district.
