History

In the first half of the 19th century was on the channel Bang Yai a customs office ( dan ) and a tax office. The channel led in winter a little water, so that the boats had to be towed. The price was 1/4 Baht per boat. The surrounding country was flat and treeless; there was little cultivated ground at rather marshy shore. At the end of the channel was at Lan Tak Fa another Customs House. Downstream there was only a Laotian village at Ban San Prathuan ( Ngiw Rai ) with a distillation.

The district Bang Yai was created in 1917 as sub-district ( King Amphoe ), by being separated from the districts of Bang Bua Thong and Bang Kruai. He received the 1921 full Amphoe status. The original name was Maenang Bang, and on 19 October 1930, he was renamed in Bang Yai, the original name of the district of Bang Kruai.
