Banganarti

Banganarti is a small village in Sudan, located about half way between the 3rd and 4th cataract of the Nile, about 10 km from Old Dongola, the capital of Makuria. Near this village remains have been found of considerable medieval churches.

The large church in Banganarti is excavated by a Polish team since 2001. Here they discovered two successive church buildings that were built from the 7th to the 11th century. In the buildings, there were several grave sites that may have been a destination for pilgrims. The church is a 80 x 100 umwallter district was created. Importance

Banganarti was obviously a very important Christian pilgrim center. The last inscriptions date from around 1350. Around this time, the church seems to have been abandoned.
