Banggai
The Banggai Islands ( Indonesian: Kepulauan Banggai ) are an archipelago in Indonesia. They are located at the eastern end of the province of Central Sulawesi.
Region of Banggai Islands
Following the recent separation from the government district Luwuk the Banggai Islands are now a separate administrative region ( Indonesian: kabupaten ) Banggai Kepulauan with capital Salakan. The district covers an area of 3214.46 km ² 171 627 inhabitants ( 2010). District head ( Bupati ) is Lania Laosa Drs. The district Banggai Kepulauan comprises 19 districts ( kecamatan ), 6 Kelurahan and 187 villages ( Desa ) (2010 ):
Geography
The Banda Sea, the Gulf of Tolo ( Teluk Tolo ) and the Molukkensee surround the Banggai Islands. The road from Peleng ( Peleng Selat ) separates the islands of Sulawesi. Many of the islands are surrounded by coral.
The Banggai Islands are 342 islands including: Peleng (2340 km ²), Banggai (268 km ²), Bangkurung (145 km ²), Bokan Islands (84 km ²), Bowokan, Labobo (80 km ²), Kebongan, Kotudan, Tropettenando, Timpau, Salue Besar (84 km ²), Salue Kecil, Masepe, and Bangkulu.
Nature
The Banggai islands lie within the biogeographic transition zone between the Asian and Australian flora and fauna, east of the Wallace Line. They are part of Wallacea, a hotspot, that is a key region of the world with very high biodiversity, but in which animals and plants are sometimes severely threatened.
Animal species that are endemic to the Banggai Islands, for example, the Banggai cardinalfish, the Banggai Crow and the Peleng Tarsier.
In spring 2000, a severe earthquake had caused considerable damage on the islands.
Check-in
The Banggai islands can be reached by plane from Palu Merpati (the capital of Central Sulawesi ). Alternatively there is a bus service to Luwuk, from there you can be ferried by boat or boat to the islands.
Despite suitability, there are hardly Tourism, dives are offered as " expeditions ".
