Bangladesh Awami League

The Awami League ( Awami League; Bengali: আওয়ামী লীগ Āoẏāmī LIG) is a political party in the former East Pakistan and is now Bangladesh.

Political Ideology

The Awami League sees himself as a center-left party. She is still one of the largest political groups in Bangladesh. It is officially left nationalist, social democratic and secular.

History

It was founded in 1949 by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and campaigned for autonomy and independence of East Pakistan. 1954 lost the hitherto ruling Pakistan Muslim League in the regional elections in East Pakistan against the opposition Awami League, which had begun in alliance " United Front " with the Krishak - Sramik party. In February 1966 Mujibur Rahman put forward a six-point program, which provided for a federation on the basis of the Lahore Resolution of 1940. The central government viewed the program as a plan for the division of Pakistan. Mujibur was arrested, tried and acquitted, 1968; the charges broke in December 1968 from violent riots in East Pakistan. It was ultimately a war of secession in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan ), the Bangladesh war, which ended in 1971 after the intervention of India with the defeat of (West) Pakistan. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the first Prime Minister of the country from 1972 until his overthrow in 1975. At the end of the period (1975 ) was the Awami League to a single party, and the regime assumed dictatorial.

From 1996 to 2001 Hasina Wajed was the daughter of Mujibur Rahman, Prime Minister of Bangladesh. 2004-2006 were committed to leading Awami members repeatedly attacks; it also happened that they were beaten hospitalized by the police.

After several years boycott the party in 2006 returned to parliament. This was mainly due to a clause of the Constitution which states that a minimum presence in Parliament is necessary in order to benefit from the advantages accruing to parliamentarians.
