Bangladesh Nationalist Party

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party ( Bengali: বাংলাদেশ জাতীয়তাবাদী দল, Bāṃlādeś Jātīẏatābādī Dal, Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Dal ) is a political party in Bangladesh.

The party is regarded as religious and conservative. Chairperson Khaleda Zia is the widow of the founder Ziaur Rahman.

Political Ideology

The BNP sees himself as a center-right party. They combine conservatism, corporatism, militarism and anti- communism and are therefore considered a more right-wing party. The BNP also represents partly anti- Semitic opinions. The party is preferably selected from the upper class and the military.

History

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party was founded on 1 September 1978 by the then President Ziaur Rahman, who came through a military coup in 1975 to power. The BNP and its coalition partners ruled Bangladesh from 1991 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006. Besides the Awami League, BNP is the second major leading party in the country.
