Bank of Ireland

The Bank of Ireland ( Irish: Banc na hÉireann ) is officially known under the name Governor and Company of the Bank of Ireland. It is a bank with its headquarters in Dublin. The company is one of the five largest banks in Ireland and Northern Ireland and listed on the ISE. Core of today's company is the Bank of Ireland founded in 1783 by a Royal Charter. The private sector institution is neither a subsidiary nor a historical cleavage of the Central Bank and Financial Services Authority of Ireland. The company is a member of the ISEQ Overall Index on the Irish Stock Exchange. The Bank of Ireland is one of four commercial banks ( Bank of Ireland, First Trust Bank, Northern Bank, Ulster Bank), the Northern Irish are allowed to print banknotes.

History

The bank was founded in 1783 by an Act of the Irish Parliament for the promotion of public and private finance. The Huguenot David la Touche was the first head of the institution. The Bank of Ireland fulfilled, comparable to the Bank of Scotland a variety of functions but never the central bank.

From the beginning of the Irish Free State in 1922 until 31 December 1971, the Institute was a kind of bank of the Irish state. The Hibernian Bank was acquired in 1958 and 1965 was followed by the National Bank of Ireland.

The company is present in addition to the market in the British Isles in Germany, Canada, Japan, the USA and Australia.
