Baransky

The Baranski - volcanic complex (Russian Вулкан Баранского, named after Nikolai Baranski, also known under the name Sashiusu -dake ) is located on the Pacific coast of Russia in the central part of the island Iturup and consists of an eroded volcano from the Pleistocene, as well as an overlying layer of volcanic from the Holocene. The summit area is formed by a lava dome and an aligned from north to west chain of several craters. Several lava flows reached in the southeast of the volcano on a broad front the Pacific coast. The only known historical eruption occurred in 1951, when it was reported by the local people on Explosive activity in the summit area where solfataras activity can still be observed today. There is an area with thermal activity, hot springs and geysers at the south-western flank.
