Baranya County (former)

The Baranya ( German rarely county Baranya; Hungarian Baranya Vármegye, Croatian Baranja, latin Comitatus Baraniensis ) was a historic administrative unit ( county / county) in the Kingdom of Hungary.

The area lies mostly in present-day Hungary ( there in Baranya county ), a smaller part in the south part of today's Croatia (as part of the County of Osijek- Baranja ).

Location

The county bordered on the Somogy, Tolna, Bács- Bodrog and Virovititz ( Verőce ). It was between the Drava River in the south and the Danube in the east.

History

The county was established relatively early in the 11th century. At that time it was enough to save into the current Slavonia. The Slavonian areas came partly from the Middle Ages through formation of other counties ( Požega etc.) or cessions of territory (especially to the Vukovar county ) lost. The basic rule structure of Baranya was marked by a strong small and medium nobility in the Middle Ages. Magnates like the Garai family and princes of the Church ( Diocese of Pécs and Abbey Pécsvárad there were few. Between 1526 and 1566 came the Baranya by conquest in the possession of the Ottoman Empire. During the Turkish rule over the territory it belonged to the Sanjak of Mohács. Hungarian Komitatsorganisation became extinct during this time. was not until after the reconquest by the Habsburg Empire 1686/1687 it was recreated as a county, this time without the Slavonian parts. Under Habsburg rule, the manorial system was changed significantly compared to vortürkischen time. The Baranya was now a country of large estates where komitatsfremde Habsburg followers the landlords dominated. After the end of the First world War in 1918 occupied Serbian troops to the field. Until the Treaty of Trianon, it was administered by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and later divided between Hungary and the UK. the case Hungary remained part remained within its borders to large Komitatsreform in 1950, this reform, the area was taken over by the city Szigetvár from Somogy County. Origin of the name Baranya

Croatian Baranja stands for Hungarian Baranya Vármegye (county). The name comes from the castle Baranyavar (formerly Castrum Borona ) back. The origin of Borona indicates Slavic origin. ( Compare the Montenegrin place Borenjina ). The Magyars replaced the Slavic "o " usually with the Hungarian a, which is pronounced similarly.
