Barbados raccoon

The Barbados raccoon (Procyon lotor gloveralleni ) is an extinct subspecies most likely of the North American raccoon (Procyon lotor ), which was endemic to the island of Barbados. According to experts, developed over 1,000 years ago from North American raccoon, which were brought by Arawak Indians as pets to Barbados, a separate subspecies, which differed from the nominate especially by the smaller size, darker fur and the larger teeth has. The only existing copy is kept in the Barbados Museum. The last clear evidence dates from 1964, when a raccoon run over on a road near Bathsheba at Saint Joseph Parish, was found. Reasons for his disappearance may be the change in the agricultural habitat and predation by farmers. Today, the nominate of the raccoon lives in Barbados.
