Barbara Ferrell

Barbara Ferrell ( Ferrell - Edmonson after marriage; born July 28, 1947 in Hattiesburg, Missouri) is a former American track and field athlete and Olympic champion.

In the late 1960s she was one of the top sprinters in the world. In the years 1967 and 1968 she set six world records: two over 100 meters, two over 200 meters and two meters in the 4 × 100 relay. In 1967 she won the 100m at the Pan American Games and was U.S. Champion in the same discipline. In 1969 she also became U.S. champion in the 100 and 220 yards. Until 1969 she studied at the same time at California State University in Los Angeles, where she also graduated.

In 1968 she took part in the Summer Olympic Games in Mexico, winning the silver medal in the 100 -meter run behind the US-American Wyomia Tyus and before the Polish Irena Szewińska. The gold medal she won in the team in the 4 × 100 m relay with teammates Margaret Bailes, Mild Rescue Cute and Wyomia Tyus. About 200 meters she finished 4th. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, she finished 7th.

Ferrell is married to the former sprinter Warren Edmonson, has two children and works as a trainer for the track and field team at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas ( UNLV ). In 1988, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the U.S. Association of Athletics Federations.
