Barbara Roles

Barbara Ann Roles ( born April 6, 1941 in San Mateo, California ) is a former American figure skater who started in a single run.

In 1960, Roles, daughter of the race racehorse trainer Carlton A. Roles ( 1903-1970 ) was national runner-up behind Carol Heiss and won both the World Championships in Vancouver as well as at the Olympic Games in Squaw Valley the bronze medal behind hot and the Dutch Sjoukje Dijkstra. Then she stepped back, got married, took the name of her husband, Pursley, and had a child, Shelley called. After the plane crash of the U.S. team on their way to the World Championship 1961 in Prague, Roles was asked to return to competitive sport, and above all the figure skaters, who now had to compete in international tournaments earlier than usual, with their experience to help. Thus Roles won their first national championship title on her return in 1962. She finished the championship in fifth place. Then she had her second child, Ronald Dean, whom she named after her was killed in the plane crash, Mentor Deane McMinn. They took therefore of no competition in 1963, in part, but trying to qualify again for the Olympic Games in 1964, this did not succeed, however, she was fifth at the national championships. Then she said goodbye to final of amateur sport. She later became a trainer. Her students included Brian Pockar, Rosalynn Sumners and Nicole Bobek.
