Barbara Thompson (musician)

Barbara Thompson ( born July 27, 1944 in Oxford) is a British fusion and jazz saxophonist, flutist and composer. She's Music Ambassador of the United Kingdom and honored as "Member of the British Empire ". Barbara Thompson is married to drummer Jon Hiseman since 1967.

Life

First, Thompson studied at the Royal College of Music clarinet, flute, piano and classical composition, but then came across the music of Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, jazz and saxophone. She first worked in the New Jazz Orchestra and the bands of Graham Collier, Howard Riley, Keef Hartley, John Dankworth worked as a studio musician at the Colosseum. After a baby break ( son Marcus (born 1972 ), daughter Anna (* 1975) ), she founded her own band, " Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia " ( German: paraphernalia ), a jazz-rock fusion band with various occupations, like with Colin Dudman (p; key), Pete Lemer ( p), Dill Katz ( b) and her husband on drums.

Furthermore, it was in 1975 at the founding of the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, the " band leader of the band ", together with Wolfgang Dauner (p ), Albert Mangelsdorff (tb ), Ian Carr (tp ), Charlie Mariano ( sax ), Ack van Rooyen (tp ), Volker Kriegel ( g), Eberhard Weber ( b ) and Jon Hiseman (dr ) involved.

Because of a 1997 diagnosed Parkinson 's disease she retired in 2001 with a farewell tour, first as an active saxophonist back. However, after a period in which she was only active as a composer (but was also involved in the recording of Kate Westbrook Cuff Clout ), she returned in 2004 to the stage to be on the Tomorrow 's Blues Tour from Colosseum to seriously ill Dick Heckstall Smith († 2004) to replace. In 2005, she was to see them live again with paraphernalia on the Never Say Goodbye Tour, as well as 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2011 with the Colosseum.

She worked closely with Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals such as Cats and together at Starlight Express, and his Requiem. She also wrote several classical compositions (eg for Evelyn Glennie ), film and television soundtracks, a private musicals and plays for the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia and their big band Moving Parts. Her poetry adaptations Love Songs In Age ( based on texts by the English poet Philip Larkin ) was hailed by The Times as an absolute highlight of the London Jazz Festival 1995.

In 2012 she had to stop again because of her illness her work with Colosseum.
