Barbara Weil

Barbara Weil ( born 1933 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American artist, the relationship between painting, sculpture, contemporary architecture and man can be seen in an unusual way. She has, in collaboration with Daniel Libeskind Studio Weil developed and built. The architecturally significant buildings in Majorca contains work and exhibition spaces of the artist.

Life

Because Barbara grew up in Chicago and attended the Roosevelt College, then the Art Institute of Chicago. While they started a family, she lived and worked in California and later in Mallorca.

Work

The painting, however, other than the New York School appears at first glance as an American Abstract Expressionism. In fact, Barbara Weil studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the shape and color theory of the Bauhaus.

Studio Weil

Because of found architectural forms in her paintings, the artist began in 1979 a series of fiberglass sculptures. When she was planning in 1998 to build a studio, she met Daniel Libeskind, and her work has been the inspiration for its architectural design.

Barbara Weil and Daniel Libeskind designed the studio in Port d' Andratx, in close cooperation. The British architectural critic Jonathan Glancey noted similarities in their approach to visual form, in the work of the artist and the architect that existed before Libeskind became known. In the gesture of the artist circle shapes were a formal basis. Libeskind's employment with the system of concentric circles, which the Majorcan philosopher Ramon Llull envisioned as a explanation of the world, proved to be a perfect complement.

Libeskind called the studio compared to its big buildings as cello sonata. Created in the dimension of a concentrated museum is a permanent exhibition space of the oeuvre of the artist.
