Barbara West

Barbara Dainton, born Barbara Joyce West ( born May 24, 1911 in Bournemouth, † October 16, 2007 in Camborne ) was one of the babies that were as passengers on board the Titanic and survived the sinking of the passenger ship. At her death she was the second to last survivor of the disaster. Millvina Dean (1912-2009) was the last survivor of the ship disaster. At the time of the accident and she had been a baby.

Life

Barbara Joyce was one of three children of the couple Edwy Arthur and Ada Mary West. Her parents took her sister Constance Miriam on the journey to America, where did the father in Florida care and settle down to work.

The female family members arrived at the downfall on the night of 15 April 1912 on board a lifeboat of the Titanic. From there, she hid the rescue ship Carpathia. It is believed that the ship Celtic mother and two daughters brought back to England. The father died at the Shipwreck. His brothers looked after the family returned home.

After school training in Purley, Truro and Exeter, she was a private tutor in a family from Cornwall and accompanied this by Spain. She returned at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. As a teacher, Barbara then worked in Guildford, Truro and Plymouth.

From 1938 until his death in 1951 she was married to her first marriage to Stanley Winder. In 1952 Barbara married William Ernest B. Dainton and spent their lives in Truro. In her last months she was in need of care.

About the disaster they did not talk to strangers. A direct memory of the event was Barbara unlike Lillian Asplund no more. They did not want a big fuss about her person. So the death of 96 -year-old was also only moved on October 16, with the funeral service on 5 November 2007 in the Cathedral of Truro into the public consciousness.
