The Barbet is a recognized by the FCI breed from France ( FCI Group 8, Section 3, Standard No. 105).

Origin and History

The medium-sized " Barbet", is one of the oldest European water dogs and possibly a precursor of the poodle. The Moors are said to have brought his ancestors in the 6th century by Spain and Portugal, where he is said to have rapidly spread throughout Europe. Is very early in Portugal Water Dog ( Cão de Água Português) mentioned that has all the features of the Barbets. This water dog you meet in the 14th century in Europe and in the 16th century it is called with the name " Barbet".

The interest in this race eased towards the end of the 19th century. Only in the 1970s, this breed of dog again experienced an upswing. In Germany, this breed is, however, still kept rare.

In breeding this breed has influenced a number of still existing breeds of hunting dogs. These include the German wire -haired pointer, the Pudelpointer, Griffon Korthals and the Irish Water Spaniel.

Description

The waterproof coat Barbet - similar to the Irish Water Spaniel - provides excellent thermal protection even in the coldest water. The hair is long, woolly, curly, and forms a special feature of hounds cords. Many colors are allowed: solid black, gray, maroon, fawn, beige, white, or more or less pied. The shades range from fawn to sandy color, the hair of the head must be up to the bridge of the nose fall. The Barbet has a long beard and a luxuriant mustache. The ears are set low and hang down long, with long hair.

Use
