Barby (Savoie)

Barby is a municipality with 3306 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the French department of Savoie ( Savoy) in the region Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

The place is located in the southeast of the agglomeration Chambery, at the foot of the massif of the Wallows. Neighboring municipalities are Challes -les -Eaux, La Ravoire, Saint -Alban- Leysse, Saint -Jean- d'Arvey and Curienne.

Barby in the wine region of Savoie. White wines from the grape Altesse ( locally called roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin roussette de Savoie. For white wines, red wines and other grape varieties, the AOC Vin de Savoie applies.

Population

The original rural community recorded in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century by the construction of numerous social housing a strong population increase.

In the 13th Mountain Infantry Battalion Barby the French army is stationed.
