Barcelona-Marathon

The Barcelona Marathon (Catalan Marató de Barcelona) is a marathon in Barcelona, to be held in March since 1978.

Route

The route is a circular route starting and finishing at the Plaça d' Espanya below the Montjuïc. First, it goes north to Camp Nou, the stadium of FC Barcelona. Shortly after you turn one for the first time for a short distance on the Avinguda Diagonal, on the one runs into town before you go back to near the start site. Here the parallel launched 10 - km run is over, while the marathoners turn on the Gran Via de los Corts and now traverse the Eixample. After three miles, turn left into the Passeig de Gràcia, past the Casa Batlló and the Casa Milà, both built by Antoni Gaudí.

After another piece on the Avinguda Diagonal it comes to two other buildings of Modernism, first north to the Hospital de Santa Creu i Sant Pau Lluís Domènech i Montaner and from thence over the Avinguda Gaudí for the Sagrada Familia, as well as the Hospital de Sant Pau is a UNESCO world Heritage Site.

Shortly after the half way mark the Torre Agbar is reached and, after another loop through the eastern part of the Eixample and on the Avinguda Diagonal, at km 30, the building of the Forum of Cultures in 2004. From there it goes now westwards towards the city center, first at Estacio de França and at the Zoo Parc de la Ciutadella over, through the Arc de Triomf and the Plaça de Catalunya.

Now it goes through the Barri Gotic Cathedral in Plaça de la Seu and Plaça Sant Jaume with the Palau de la Generalitat and the Casa de la Ciutat on the southern part of La Rambla, about which one to run on the Columbus statue. From there it goes through a loop through the district of Sant Antoni to the finish on the Plaça de Espanya.

History

The event, which was originally called Marató de Catalunya, was held in Palafrugell in the first two years.

The course was long a point - to-point course with start and finish in Mataró, Barcelona. A similar line was also run in the marathon of the 1992 Summer Olympics. As with this goal in the years that lay in the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys on Montjuïc, but then decided to but for the runners to spare this last climb.

2001, the marathon was completely laid in Barcelona's city center. Due to disagreements with the city administration, the event was canceled in 2005, and instead hosted a Marató del Mediterrani the surrounding area. Then in 2006 the city was involved in the organization and the marathon again brought to the city center.
