Bard College, founded in 1860 as St. Stephen 's College is a private college in Annandale -on-Hudson in the U.S. state of New York.

History

John Bard was the grandson of the physician Samuel Bard, who had founded the medical school at Columbia University. The uncle of John Bard was Rev. John McVickar, a professor at Columbia University.

In the 1940s, Bard College was a haven for immigrants from Europe, including Hannah Arendt, Stefan Hirsch, Felix Hirsch, Emil Hauser, Hans Marchand, Werner Wolff and Heinrich Blücher.
