Bardiya District

Bardiya is one of 75 districts in Nepal. It lies in Bheri Zone on the border with India and had the year 2001 382.649 inhabitants; 2011, there were 426.576. The majority Bardiyas is occupied by the Terai plain. The Bardiya National Park occupies 968 km ² the northern half of the district. The population is mainly Tharu.

History

Bardiya was a part of the Kingdom of Gorkha as it had to be ceded in the Treaty of Sugauli in 1815 to Great Britain (India). Under the government of Jang Bahadur Rana it was returned in 1860 with Banke, Kailali and Kanchanpur in Nepal.
