Bare-eared squirrel monkey

The Naked Ear squirrel monkey ( Saimiri ustus ) is a primate of the group of New World monkeys.

Features

Naked Ear squirrel monkeys reach a body length from 30 to 38 centimeters, with yet another 41 to 47 centimeters long tail. Your weight is about 0.7 to 0.9 kilograms. Their fur is dyed golden yellow on the back, the belly is lighter. The forearms, hands and feet are orange - yellow. The face is white, the cap at the top of the head is gray -brown. Named giving feature is the lack of ear tufts, which differ along with the bleached back this way from the ordinary squirrel monkeys.

Distribution and habitat

Naked Ear squirrel monkeys are found only in the Amazon basin in western Brazil. Its distribution area is bounded to the north of the Amazon and east of the Rio Tapajós and ranges in the southwest up to the Bolivian border. Their habitat is forests, keeping them mainly in temporarily flooded river forests and secondary forests.

Way of life

Little is known about the life of the Naked Ear squirrel monkeys, presumably it is broadly in line with the rest of the squirrel monkey. They are diurnal and arboreal climbing and sent quickly through the branches. They live in large groups, which are composed of numerous males and females, the social relations are built around the females around that establish a hierarchy. Their diet consists mainly composed of fruits and insects.

Endangering

Although these primates have a large circulation area, but this is strongly affected by deforestation and conversion to agricultural land. The IUCN is concerned that the total population in the next 25 years will fall by 20 to 25% and lists the species as " Near Threatened " ( near threatened ).
