Bare-metal restore

Bare - Metal Restore is the name of a Datensicherungsart, in which all information needed to restore components such as a bootable live operating system, applications, or metadata is in a mini version on the backup media. So it is possible, even on systems where the operating system is not working or who have none at all installed, perform a restore and set up a workable computer in no time.

There are several approaches for such backups. One way is to back up directly to a bootable medium such as CD, DVD, USB drive, external hard drive and boot from it. Another possibility is to generate a bootable medium only for the start, which then launches an application that creates the effective backup data, for example, a backup server.

There are several manufacturers who offer backup products with bare-metal function. In German-speaking countries, for example, Acronis True Image, CBMR Cristie Data Products of the GmbH, System Center Data Protection Manager, NovaBACKUP NovaStor, O & O DiskImage, StorageCraft ShadowProtect, Symantec Ghost and ARCserve D2D from CA Technologies are known.
