Barent Fabritius

Barent Fabritius ( baptized on November 16, 1624 in Middenbeemster; † before 20 October 1673 in Amsterdam,. Actually Barent Pietersz Fabritius ) was a Dutch painter.

Life and work

Son of Pieter Carelsz. Gen. Fabritius and Barbertje Barentsdr van der Maes. Brother of Carel Fabritius and John Fabritius. Barent is not identical to the already born 1623 Barent, which is probably quite soon died.

Like his brother Carl, Barent also likely to have been brought up by his father to painting. Probably around 1643 he followed his brother to Amsterdam to occur there in contact with Rembrandt. Whether he, however, whose pupil was not occupied, but, the fact that Barent apparently shortly afterwards again was in Middenbeemster, rather against it. Nevertheless, he seems to Rembrandt to have perhaps been about his brother in connection, for his early paintings show a significant influence through this. Only for 1647 can be a further stay in Amsterdam show where he is documented from at least 1650 as an independent painter. On August 18, 1652 he married in Middenbeemster the Delft derived Catharina Mussers.

Around the same time, Barent began more and more by the sole influence of Rembrandt to solve and approached more to the new style of his brother, without ever reaching it. As a result, most of his works appear as a link between Rembrandt and Jan Vermeer. In the mid-50s, he established new contacts to Leiden, where he in 1656 the city architect Willem Leendertsz. van der Helm portrayed. This lucrative contract work caused him obvious, seek there, for in 1657 he signed a three-year lease contract there. Nevertheless, he is member of the local Guild of Saint Luke in May of the following year. In 1658, he leaves again suffering and keeps alternately in Middenbeemster and Amsterdam. Nevertheless, he keeps his Leyden contacts upright and paid in 1661 for a commissioned work for the local Lutheran church. 1663 again was followed by a short stay in Leiden, before he again settled in Middenbeemster, where he remained until at least 1669. He then moved again to Amsterdam, where he was buried on October 20, 1673 on the Leidse Kerkhof. He left behind six children.
