Bargemon

Bargemon is a commune with 1512 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Bargemon located in the north of the department at the foot of the Alps Varoiser on a ridge, which extends into a deep, round basin surrounded by mountains. From the sole of the boiler, which is located on 319 m, the profile of the municipality extends to the peaks of the Col du Bel- Homme (951 m), Blaque Meyanne ( 1033 m) and Pierrion ( 1,089 m ) over 700 meters.

History

In the cave of Belhomme conceal the remains of a Neolithic settlement.

In the Middle Ages the town was first mentioned under the name 814 Bergemulum. In sources from the 11th century he appears under the name Barjamo. The place belonged in the 10th century the Lords of Arles. Bargemon was a fief of the Villeneuve family that played a significant role in the history of Provence in the 13th century.

The Château Fava few kilometers west of Bargemon located belonged to the Knights Hospitaller in the 13th century. From the once major settlement Fava, which was destroyed during the Wars of Religion, few remains are still preserved.

Demographics

The population development of the community was slightly above average since the early 1960s despite a permanently negative birth rate. This is due to several immigration waves, the early 1960s, mid 1970s and since the early 1990s, the natural decline more than offset.

Culture and sights

The site of located on a mountain ridge above the cliffs of Brovès Bargemon has retained its medieval character. Narrow streets with old houses combine numerous small, shady places with small fountains, one of which was classified 18th century as a monument historique.
